My internet nostalgia

Welcome to my nostalgic shrine! I will talk here about some of my brazilian childhood, from 2000s to 2010s. This page was inspired by an old website that was my favorite, Ah Negão.

In 2010s, memes focused blogs were pretty common in brazilian internet. All these blogs actually did was only repost memes from Facebook with their watermark.

I'll summarize my childhood journey.

The biggest blogs were Não Intendo, Le Ninja and also Ah Negão.

One site that I absolutely remember is a dead social network called "Orkut", that was pretty big in Brazil and India. Orkut, before Facebook arrival on Brazil, was THE social media. A lot of my familiars, including myself, had an Orkut account. It had a lot of games, my favorite ones were Buddy Poke, Milmo and Colheita Feliz (Happy Harvest).

In 2000s there's also this game called "Splash", nowadays a lost media where you take care of a Tamagotchi-like virtual pet. You could feed them, play RPS with them, educate'em, shower'em... It was soooo cool. Splash was from a big franchise in Brazil, Turma da Mônica (Monica's Gang). Which also had a cool website back then.

There were also two sites that I used to visit: Iguinho, where had a lot of games and parts to explore and a Nestlé (yeah, unfortunately, but fuck'em) game website called "Mais Divertido", where had a lot of food-themed games.

Speaking of webgames, I used to play a lot of Flash games, mainly in websites called "Click Jogos" and "FRIV". They hosted a lot of games, including my favorites, Amateur Surgeon.

My absolute favorites webgames, besides Amateur Surgeon, was Club Penguin and KoGaMa. They were the absolute goats. I didn't like Habbo Hotel, though.

If there was also something that I liked to do was stalking user forums. TBH, I don't like a lot to remember these, because it gave some of my traumas that still persists, buuut ok.

I also liked reading bad creepypastas. Yeah, I grew up reading sonic.exe (2011x), Slenderman, Jeff the Killer, even Tails Doll, it was cool but very scary. And download sites to seek more games, too.

I had two main consoles in my childhood: PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360.

My grandpa had a pay-to-play house with a lot of PS2. That's where I played videogames for the very first time. I don't remember what the exact game was, but I think it was LEGO Batman or Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

In PlayStation 2, I absolutely loved playing Rockstar's games: Bully and the GTAs. Bully is a game where you play as a student in a school. I loved the vibes. I could roam the school for hours.

From the GTAs, I fell in love playing Vice City. I still love San Andreas, but man, Vice City had the best ambient and world design from the GTA's, and sometimes can even face GTA IV's ambientation. Everything in Vice City feels so special, from the radios to the vehicles, exploring the city was truly fun. I remember trying to beat the game on a shitty laptop, many years ago. I had so much fun in Vice City.

Apart from Rockstar, I loved playing Crash Bandicoot! Crash of the Titans is a fine but repetitive game, but man, I loved it so mush playing with my cousins. Twinsanity is a fine game too, but I had trouble playing the game 'cuz I thought it was too difficult for me.

Later in my teens, my parents gave me a Xbox 360. My first game for the console was the Rango tie-in game. That's probably the first game I beat in my whole life. Or maybe it was LEGO Batman? Idk.

Some games that I had were: the Rio (the blue birds movie) tie-in game, Minecraft: Story Mode, Halo 4 (didn't played a lot tho), Castle Crashers, GTA IV...

But for me the absolute goat was GTA V. Imagine your cousin reveals to you that Rockstar launched a new GTA game? Dude, it was like, the must-have game for me.

When I got it for the first time, it was like a dream came true. Dude, that was probably here my love for games grew up so much.

On phone, I used to play all kinds of games, but I remember playing a lot of Clash Royale, Pou, Talking Tom, Temple Run, Subway Surfers and Cut the Rope.

But if there's a game that left marks in my life was... Minecraft.

Minecraft alone consumed a big part of my childhood.

I don't even remember what's my first memory with Minecraft, but I think it was randomly watching it on YouTube.

Since then I wanted to play like I wanted to play GTA V later in my life. The first time I played Minecraft was at version 1.3.2 or 1.4.6. Of cource, it was the demo that Mojang used to have in the official "minecraft.net" website. But it was truly special.

Later I learned how to download pirated launchers, AnjoCaido, KeiNett and then Shiginima. And then I made my parents buy the game via keyshop. This made me play a lot of original-only servers like Hypixel and Mineplex.

Speaking of Mineplex, I also made my parents buy the Hero rank, I don't like to remember too but it's funny, I guess.

I liked installing random mods and visiting random blogs. That's how I met some of my oldest friends online. But unfortunately, they're not present in my life anymore.

My favorite type of servers was creative and minigame focused ones. I had a lot of fun playing these servers. And my favorite mods were Aether, IndustrialCraft 2, Twilight Forest, BuildCraft and GalactiCraft.

My father says that when I was five years old when I used a computer for the first time.

I probably learnt to read thanks to computer and reading Monica's Gang in my childhood. Anyways, using Windows XP made me realize a new interest: the tech in general. Now, Microsoft with Windows always had the priority in profit, as any other company. But these were the times were it looked like that usability sold more than ads.

Nowadays, I'm a Linux enjoyer and user, but man, Windows XP felt so good back there. A time where the team genuinely cared about the quality of the product.

XP had some cool games, like the Space Cadet. And also a surprisingly good customization.

And then we have Windows 7. I never daily drove Vista, or seen anyone IRL that used Vista for that long. Windows 7 was the peak Frutiger Aero, and while I enjoy the aesthetic, I sometimes think that is very flanderized nowadays, and rare are the people that nails the look, like Frutiger Aero Archive (No offenses to everyone that has a FA project/website! It's just my opinion).

While Windows 7 had classics like Purble Place, Chess and Mahjong, I enjoyed more the 7's customization. I loved how you could download new theme packs from Microsoft's website, with new images and custom sounds. I probably downloaded more than 100+ of these packs.

As for the phones, before any Android or iPhone, I used my mother's phone to play games. She had an old BlackBerry phone (I don't remember the exact model), and later a Nokia with SymbianOS.

Some years later, my father bought for the first time the iPhone 4. I've heard of the phone and I wished I could some of their games, like Doodle Jump.

I played a lot of games in his iPhone, ones that I could remember were Where's My Water?, Temple Run and Spy Mouse.

I earned my first years later, an iPhone 4, later an iPhone 5, and then a Samsung phone. That's where I realized that Android is way better than iOS.

I also had a tablet. I had a lot of fun but later I just lost interest.

I enjoyed every single piece of hardware I had as a child.
